Raised in New York, Novelli returned to Italy in 1903 to study art in Rome. He returned to the U.S. where finished much of his personal work in the 1920s before the depression. Novelli mostly worked in bronze. Novelli took his own life in 1940.

Born in 1885 in Sulmona, Italy, James Novelli's family immigrated to the United States around 1890. He was sent back to Italy in 1903 to study art and sculpture. He returned to the U.S. after his studies and had some success as a carver in the 1920s, working mostly in Bronze. The Great Depression kept him from further success and is believed to have pushed him to take his own life in 1940.
